The Leafcutters March On

When I was younger, a friend on my brother’s and his family often invited lots of kids down to their ranch. We would ride in tractors, play tag, roast marshmallows, and crack open fallen pecans. The pecan trees lined the property in orderly rows. As expected, an area like this attracted many insects. My favorite by far to watch were the leafcutter ants. They would build their nests near the base of the pecan trees, and the worker ants would march out to collect leaves, rend them into smaller pieces, and carry them back to the nest in orderly lines. The small workers would carry the smallest leaf cuttings and the large ants would carry the heavier ones. The leaf pieces were always impressively large compared to the size of the ants, displaying their massive strength. The ants use the leaves to grow fungus that they eat. I think it is amazing that humans growing pecan trees are not the only ones on that ranch practicing agriculture.
