Will Rice Will Sting

I was walking to Will Rice commons from the Grove for my weekly Monday Coffeehouse manager lunch meeting when I noticed a few insects flying around the metal “Will Rice College” sign. As I got closer, I realized they weren’t friendly little bees, or flies, but bright red wasps. There were about three or four of them and they were most likely of the species Polistes carolina. Their wings were jet black and their exoskeletons were a shiny rusty dark red color. They didn’t seem overly aggressive, but I still kept my distance because their stingers looked very threatening. When I was a child, I was stung on my toe and it was quite painful and I had no desire to repeat that experience. I didn’t get close enough to see why they were congregating around the sign but I assume they probably had a nest in there.
